Abu Dhabi-UAE: 28 October, 2011 – More than 10,000 people from across the UAE gathered for the second ‘The Market @ Masdar City’, the family-focused street fair and organic market held at Masdar City, which aims to be one of the most ecofriendly and sustainable cities in the world.The event organized by Masdar and supported by the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD), aimed to inform, educate, and engage visitors about sustainability issues including; water conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean technology while showcasing elements of Masdar City.
Activities for children and adults demonstrated the liveability of a sustainable city, provided information about renewable energy technology, and displayed the exciting projects and innovations underway at Masdar City. Families took rides on the driverless and futuristic personalised rapid transit (PRTs) pod cars, one of the many eco-friendly features at Masdar City. Onsite tours were provided to get a first-hand glimpse of one of the world’s greenest campuses and learn more about the cutting-edge cleantech research and development, pilot projects and technology testing at Masdar City. They also saw the 45-meter Wind Tower, which is inspired by the barjeel, the traditional cooling system used for centuries in the UAE, roof-mounted PV panel arrays used to power Masdar Institute and the 10MW PV plant, which powers Masdar City and sends excess energy to the grid. Children learned about sustainability and environmental stewardship from a “Mad Scientist workshop.

It offers us an exceptional opportunity to invite the community and introduce them to the new energy concepts being developed by Masdar and the progress in the build of Masdar City. We were able to share with the community Masdar’s initiatives that seek to make Abu Dhabi the preeminent source of renewable energy knowledge, development, implementation and the world’s benchmark for sustainable development.”
Masdar City embodies Abu Dhabi’s commitment to a sustainable future. Pioneering best practices in sustainable urban planning, design and development, it is evolving as an attractive destination for knowledge-intensive industries, companies and organisations operating in renewable energy as well as sustainable and clean technologies globally.
Families also enjoyed the opportunity to explore wares from over 35 exhibitors including organic produce, cosmetics, and skincare products from RIPE Market, Solace Organics,the Organic Foods and Café, @Home, Ekotribe, and the Philippine Community Fund – The Little Fair Trade Shop, which has pledged to reinvest profits back into the communities where the products were manufactured. As well as UAE based K’s Cookies, Baby Cakes, Hessa Al Mazrouei T-shirt, and Foa Al Ward.
The line-up of entertainment included live music, raffle draws, balloon artists, and children’s entertainers dressed in costumes made from recycled materials.
